André Frossard

André Frossard (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃dʁe fʁɔsaʁ]; 14 January 1915 - 2 February 1995) was a French journalist and essayist.

Biography

Frossard was born in Saint-Maurice-Colombier, Doubs to Louis-Oscar Frossard, one of the historic founders of the Parti communiste français, who was leader of the party for 31 years. His parents raised him an atheist, but when he was 20 years old he converted to Roman Catholicism. He was baptized on July 8, 1935, in the chapelle des religieuses de l’Adoration. He died in Versailles.

André Frossard was elected to the Académie française in 1987 to Seat 2. He succeeded René de Castries; seat 2 is currently occupied by the writer Hector Bianciotti.
